History of Kantha Stitch Saree
This form of traditional handcrafted textile originated in the culturally rich region of Bengal, India. The history of Kantha embroidery dates back to ancient times, with its roots embedded in the daily lives of Bengali women. The word “Kantha” itself means ‘throat’ in Sanskrit, which reflects the running stitch that characterizes this exquisite embroidery technique.
The art of Kantha stitching has been passed down through generations, often practiced by rural women in Bengal as a form of creative expression and a means of recycling old textiles. Historically, Kantha embroidery was used to repurpose old, worn-out fabrics, such as saris and dhotis, into beautiful and functional pieces. Women would layer several layers of old cloth and use the simple running stitch to create intricate patterns, telling stories and capturing the essence of their lives in each piece.
Originally, Kantha embroidery served a practical purpose as well, providing extra warmth to the chilly nights of Bengal. Over time, it evolved into a cherished form of artistic expression, with motifs ranging from geometric patterns to floral designs, scenes from everyday life, and mythological symbols.
The revival of Kantha silk sarees as a prominent form of textile art can be attributed to the efforts of Shantiniketan’s founder, Rabindranath Tagore, and his vision to preserve and promote traditional crafts. Tagore’s encouragement led to the development of Kantha as a recognized art form, transforming it from a domestic craft into a celebrated cultural heritage.
Today, Kantha silk sarees is highly sought after for their unique beauty and cultural significance. Artisans in Bengal continue to keep this tradition alive, incorporating modern designs and colors while staying true to the essence of Kantha embroidery. The popularity of Kantha silk sarees has expanded beyond regional borders, finding appreciation among connoisseurs of handcrafted textiles worldwide. These sarees not only showcase the artistic skill of the craftsperson but also carry with them the rich history and cultural heritage of Bengal.Â
